The Scott Godwin Agency : Providing tips for a safe Thanksgiving

Are you about ready for your friends and family to come over, join you at the dining table and enjoy some tasty treats? While it is the main goal for The Scott Godwin Agency and all of you out there to enjoy this time, we should also be mindful of how to prepare and cook a turkey safely. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has collaborated with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to determine the standard safety measures for Thanksgiving meals. According to the CDC the turkey basics include: thawing safely, preparing, stuffing and cooking the turkey. Our OKC insurance agent has used some of this basic information to provide you with an easy to understand list here:

1.) Thawing: For best practice, always have a food thermometer ready to use! Do not allow your turkey to reach between 40 and 140°F as this is the temperature range that enables foodborne bacteria.

2.) Preparing: Thoroughly wash your hands, utensils, and work surfaces as you prepare the turkey to avoid spreading bacteria and food contamination.

3.) Stuffing: To be safest, cook the stuffing outside the turkey in a casserole dish. For a stuffed turkey make certain to stuff the raw turkey and use a food thermometer! The center of the stuffing should be at least 165°F.

4.) Cooking: Thoroughly follow all cooking instructions. Check the temperature of the center which should reach a minimum of 165°F. Let the turkey stand 20 minutes before removing all stuffing from the cavity and carving the meat

The Scott Godwin Agency hope that these four main turkey preparation safety tips will get you headed in the right direction so that you may prepare a safe, delicious meal for your family this Thanksgiving! Our OKC insurance agent is excited to enjoy a well-made turkey feast and we hope you are, too!

On behalf of The Scott Godwin Agency, Happy Thanksgiving!!
